Thorium Oleate SDS

Revision Date: 01/31/2023

Thorium Oleate is an interesting formulation of Thorium. It was originally used in the manufacture of salves and creams. To date we have not been able to find either a formula or CAS Number.

We suggest that this product be handled with the same precautions as with any thorium-related product.

2. HAZARDS AND PROTECTION

Storage:

  • Keep in a cool, dry, dark location, in a tightly sealed container or cylinder.
  • Keep away from incompatible materials, ignition sources, and untrained individuals.
  • Secure and label area.
  • Protect containers and cylinders from physical damage.

Handling:

  • All chemicals should be considered hazardous.
  • Avoid direct physical contact.
  • Use appropriate approved safety equipment.
  • Untrained individuals should not handle this chemical or its container.
  • Handling should occur in a chemical fume hood.

Protection: Wear appropriate protective gloves, clothing, and goggles.

Respirators: Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

Small spills and leaks:

  • Do not touch damaged packages or spilled material.
  • Cover liquid spill with sand, earth, or other noncombustible absorbent material.
  • Cover powder spill with plastic sheet or tarp to minimize spreading.
  • Contact radiation safety officer.

3. HEALTH

Exposure Effects

Ingestion, skin, and eyes: See inhalation.

Inhalation:

  • Minimal risk if packaging remains intact.
  • Package damage can result in a measurable release of radiation, but the risk is still low.

First Aid

General advice: In the case of accident or if you feel unwell, seek medical advice immediately.

Inhalation:

  • Apply artificial respiration if patient is not breathing.
  • Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult.
  • See Ingestion.

Skin and eyes:

  • Immediately flush with running water for at least 20 minutes.
  • See Ingestion.

Ingestion:

  • Medical problems take priority over radiological concerns.
  • Use first aid treatment according to the nature of the injury.
  • Do not delay care and transport of a seriously injured person.

Firefighting

Presence of radioactive material will not influence the fire control processes and should not influence selection of techniques.

  • Small fires: Dry chemical, carbon dioxide, water spray or regular foam.
  • Large fires: Water spray, fog (flooding amounts).

Fire potential: May burn but does not ignite readily.

4. HANDLING AND STORAGE

Precautions for safe handling:

  • Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothing.
  • When using do not eat, drink, or smoke.
  • Avoid Breathing Dust.
  • Wash thoroughly after handling.
  • Use only with adequate ventilation.

Conditions for safe storage:

  • Store in radioactive materials area.
  • Keep storage container tightly closed.
  • Store separately from incompatible materials.
  • Observe all Federal, State, and local regulations regarding storage of this substance.

Personal Protective Equipment

Clothing, glove, and eye protection equipment will provide protection against alpha particles, and some protection against beta particles, depending on thickness, but will not shield gamma radiation.

Eye protection: Employee must wear appropriate eye protection that will not allow the introduction of particles into the eyes. Contact lenses should not be worn.

Clothing: Disposable over garments, including head coverings and foot covering, should be worn by any employee engaged in handling any radioactive substance. These garments are also recommended even if the employee is working with a “glove box” containment system. Certain clothing fibers may be useful in dosimetry so clothing should be kept.

In the event of an accident, large-scale release or a large-scale clean-up full protective clothing will be necessary.

Gloves: Employee must wear appropriate protective gloves to prevent contact with this substance. Used gloves may present a radiation hazard and should be disposed of as radioactive waste.

Respirator: The following respirators and maximum use concentrations are recommendations by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, NIOSH pocket guide to chemical hazards; NIOSH criteria documents or by the U.S. Department of Labor, 29 CFR 1910 Subpart Z.

The specific respirator selected must be based on contamination levels found in the workplace, must not exceed the working limits of the respirator, and be jointly approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (NIOSH-MSHA).

For Firefighting and Other Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health Conditions

Any self-contained breathing apparatus that has a full-face piece respirator with a high-efficiency particulate filter.

Any supplied-air respirator that has a full face-piece and is operated in a pressure-demand or other positive-pressure mode in combination with an auxiliary self-contained breathing apparatus operated in pressure-demand or other positive-pressure mode.

5. DISPOSAL INFORMATION
