4. HAZARDS AND PROTECTION

This material decomposes to form U2O7 then to UO3 and oxygen.

Storage:

  • Protect from physical damage.
  • Store in a cool, dry place.
  • Protect personnel from radiation emanation if present.
  • Separate from other readily oxidable or combustible materials.

Handling:

  • All chemicals should be considered hazardous.
  • Avoid physical contact.
  • Use appropriate and approved safety equipment.
  • Untrained individuals should not handle this material or its container.
  • Handling should occur in a chemical fume hood.

Protection: Wear protective gloves, clothing, and goggles.

Respirators: Wear a positive self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

Small Spills and Leaks:

  • Do not touch damaged packages or spilled material.
  • If the material spilled is in liquid form, cover it with sand, earth, or other noncombustible absorbent material.
  • If the material spilled is in powder form, cover it with a plastic sheet or tarp to minimize spreading.
  • Contact the RSO.

Stability: Stable at recommended storage conditions.

Incompatibilities: Reacts rapidly with liquid bromine trifluoride.

5. FIREFIGHTING

The presence of a radioactive material will not influence the fire control processes and should not influence the selection of techniques.

  • Small fires: Dry chemical, carbon dioxide, water spray, or regular foam.
  • Large fires: Water spray, fog (flooding amounts).

Fire Potential: May burn but does not ignite readily.

6. HEALTH AND EXPOSURE EFFECTS

This material decomposes to form U2O7 then to UO3 and oxygen.

Exposure Effects

Ingestion and Inhalation: Stridor, dyspnea, upper airway injury, and pulmonary edema, especially following inhalation of vaporized caustics may occur.

Skin and Eyes:

  • Severe skin and eye irritation may occur.
  • Burns may occur.

7. FIRST AID

Inhalation:

  • Apply artificial respiration if the patient is not breathing.
  • If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen.
  • See Ingestion.

Skin and Eyes:

  • Immediately flush with water for at least 20 minutes.
  • See ingestion.

Ingestion:

  • Medical problems take priority over radiological concerns.
  • Use first aid treatment according to the nature of the injury.
  • Do not delay the care and transport of a seriously injured person.
